Nutritionist v Dietitian

I regularly get asked what the difference between a Nutritionist and a Dietitian is. As my client, understanding the difference between the two is really important so I am going to break it down for you:

What are your qualifications?
As you can see on my About Me page, I have completed my Nutrititionist training at university. This required 1.5 years of full time-study (including summer semester) in addition to my undergraduate qualifications in basic human biology.

I am also registered with the Nutrition Society of Australia which means that I am required to undertake regular professional development in nutrition, which keeps me up to date with research and current trends.

What is the difference between seeing a Dietitian and a Nutritionist?
Dietitians specialise in medical nutrition therapy. That is, they are trained in treating patients with serious medical conditions in hospital such as cystic fibrosis, eating disorders and cancer.

A Nutritionist specialises in providing nutrition advice for health. That is, you can come to see us for things such as weight loss, general health advice, food intolerances, sports nutrition and injuries, to name a few.

Will I recieve a health fund rebate?
Medicare only provides a rebate for nutrition services delivered by a Dietitian if you have a chronic health condition that your GP or specialist identifies as requiring a health care plan. This is a special documt that your GP must complete for you to be eligible. In this instance, you will be referred to a Dietitian and will recieve a Medicare rebate for a small portion of up to 5 visits only. A new diagnosis of diabetes is a good example of this.

I am able to provide a rebate through most private health funds. But please note that the amount will vary between funds and it is your responsibility to determine your level of cover and whether my services are included under your plan.
