Juicing versus smoothies

With Winter fast approaching, the mercury dropping and a vast array of not so fun viruses lurking, I'm all about packing as many nutrients into your diet as you possibly can. I've also started juicing so I wanted to address all of the questions I regularly get about the difference between a juice and a smoothie.

First up, everything has its place and its usually a question of what and how, rather than a blanket statement that one is better than the other. Let me start with the far more controversial, juicing...

Juices

When you juice your fruit and veg, your separating out the water component, containing all your vitamins and minerals from the solid, dietary fibre. With less effort to digest, your body is able to very quickly absorb all those wonderful nutrients from your fruit and veg, so you have an opportunity to potentially increase your nutrient absorption. If you're someone who is great at eating their fruit and vegetables, then missing out on the dietary fibre doesn't matter and you can actually save those leftover bits to use for baking - so you aren't really missing out on anything. And remember, you're still getting your soluble fibres when you juice. Watch this space for my carrot cake recipe, using the fibre bits from your juice.

Where I caution juicing is when you get carried away and its all about the fruit. You can very quickly increase your calorie intake and spike your blood sugar levels. So I recommend focusing on veggies if you're making juices. Carrots make a great base, and its also an opportunity to get extra greens into your day.

Smoothies

When you make a smoothie, you add all of your ingredients to the blender, and nothing is wasted. You can also add other macros like healthy fats from nuts, proteins in the way of yoghurt, and so on. Smoothies can be a great meal replacement, quick meal, or a way to boost your veg and fibre intake by focussing on vegetables over fruit.

Like juicing though, its easy to get carried away and end up with a very calorie dense drink.

My conclusions

I guess what I'm saying is that everything has its place. If you do like to make your own juices, opt for a cold press juicer. These newer juicers extract juice by squashing your fruit, rather than using a rotating motor that gets hot. By cold pressing you actually preserve far more of the nutrients, especially those degraded by heat like vitamin C. A good quality Juicer like the Kuvings Evo820 also extracts far more of the juice than most. Personally, that's the one I have, love and have in my online shop and it also makes smoothies.

So, in short - juicing and smoothies both have their place in your health!
